The 2020 Studio Prize is now open for submissions!
The ARCHITECT Studio Prize recognizes thoughtful, innovative, and ethical studio courses at accredited architecture schools around the world. The prize is designed to celebrate the creativity of studio course curricula and projects—and, this year, the resilience of faculty and students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A jury of distinguished design professionals will judge each studio course according to its initial brief, research, process, and resulting student work.
Winning entrants will be notified in October; their courses will be published concurrently in the November 2020 print issue of ARCHITECT and online.
The program’s exclusive sponsor, Sloan, has made available $20,000 in prize money, which will be awarded at the jury’s discretion to students whose work was included in winning studio course submissions.
An additional $5,000 in prize money is available for the Studio Prize’s annual Sloan Award, which each year recognizes a studio or studios that focus on sustainability, specifically water conservation.
Eligibility
Full-, part-time, and visiting faculty and administrators at any accredited architecture school may submit studio courses for consideration. (The Studio Prize is now open to submissions from schools outside North America!) All studio courses must occur in the context of a professional Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture program, and all must have been concluded within the academic year immediately preceding the submission deadline, including the preceding summer session (this year, between approximately May 2019 and May 2020).
Students may not enter thier own individual projects for consideration at this time.
Awards are contingent upon ARCHITECT’s verification that the jury-selected courses meet all eligibility requirements. ARCHITECT reserves the final decision on eligibility and accepts no liability in that regard.
Categories
The jury will review submissions in categories that correspond to degree type and student level. When entering the program, select the category that most closely matches your course’s place in its academic program. There may not necessarily be a winner or winners in every category. If your studio does not conform exactly to the nomenclature below, select the nearest equivalent category and detail the difference in the studio description.

Deadlines:
Regular entries are due Sept. 18, 2020, at 11:59 PM EDT.
Late entries are due Sept. 23, 2020 Oct. 14, 2020, at 11:59 PM EDT, and incur an additional $25 fee.
Administrative Fees: $45. Administrative fees, due upon registration, must be paid online by credit card. An additional $25 late fee will be charged for entries completed between Sept. 18 and Sept. 23, 2020 Oct. 14, 2020. Administrative fees are non-refundable.
Submission
The awards process is completely digital. You can register, complete your entry forms, and upload your entry materials (including visuals) online. You may also return to add to or modify your entry at a later date, prior to the entry deadline.
Entry Materials
Your entry will consist of an online form as well as supporting documents that you will upload to this website. The online entry form is divided into two sections:
Registration, which will ask for:
- Entrant Information (contact details for the faculty member preparing the entry)
- School Information (accrediting organization and contact details for the school)
- Studio Course Information (including course title, level and degree type)
- Payment of $45 administrative fee
Note: Once you submit your registration, you will not be able to go back and edit any information in that section. Please carefully review the information before submitting.
Submission, which will ask for:
- A Studio Course Description (including course description, project brief, constraints, research, digital and physical tools, advisors or collaborators, number of students, etc.)
- A Description of the Effects of COVID-19 on the Studio (including how the course eveolved during the transition to remote learning)
- Student Contact Information (names and email addresses for students whose work is being submitted)
- A short statement addressing why your studio should be considered for the Sloan Award, should you wish to be considered for it.
- Supporting documents for your entry, which must include examples of three different student projects (with the exception of studios where all the students collaborate on a single project) produced for the course. Files can be .jpg images or videos in .mp4 format. You can upload up to 5 files per project, for a maximum of 15 files.
The final step of your application is to finalize and submit your entry. Once you finalize and submit your form, you will be unable to edit it further.
Anonymity
To maintain anonymity in judging, no names of schools, faculty, students, or collaborating parties may appear on any submission materials (including file names), except where specifically requested on the online entry form. Do not, however, conceal the title or location of course projects.
Providing Additional Materials
Entrants whose submissions are selected as winners agree to make available further information and publication-quality graphic materials as needed by ARCHITECT. ARCHITECT may require additional information from the students whose work is featured in the winning studios’ submissions in order for them to receive a cash prize.
Rights
Professors must be able to grant Hanley Wood Media, Inc. the rights to reproduce any images submitted as part of their entry with coverage of the winners, should their studio be selected.
Award Recognition
Studio Prize winners will be announced first in the November 2020 issue of ARCHITECT.
